‘Oil’ Discovered In Ra Smells Like Diesel: Headman
The oil substance discover at Barotu, Saivou in Ra, which is clogging the estuaries in the area.

A team from the Mineral Resource Department dispatched to Barotu Village in Ra yesterday were still carrying tests on a substance believed to be ‘oil’ discovered by villagers over the weekend.

“At this stage we cannot confirm anything or report anything until tests were done,” said Assistant Director of Mineral Development Dr Raijieli Taga.

“But yes our team is at the village now collecting samples.”

Barotu Village headman Ratu Meciusela Tulewa said the substance smelled like diesel.

Ratu Tulewa said the team from the ministry arrived at 8am and left in the afternoon.

“They took samples of water, sand, mud and rocks for testing,” Ratu Tulewa said.

The ‘oil’ was discovered by children from the village on Saturday while they were bathing at the estuary along the Wainisogai River towards the Viti Levu Bay.

They had felt an unusual heat in the water and that it felt different and then they noticed a rainbow colour on the surface, Ratu Tulewa said.

Ratu Tulewa said this was the first time this sighting of the substance was discovered at their village.

He said no other villages nearby had come across the same substance.

“We will just have to wait and see what the outcome from the Ministry is,” he said. Edited by Rusiate Mataika
