Burotu ‘oil’ Samples Sent For Testing
The oil substance discover at Barotu, Saivou in Ra, which is clogging the estuaries in the area.

 

Samples of a substance discovered at , in Ra at the weekend will take three weeks to determine whether it is crude oil or something else.

This was confirmed yesterday by the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources assistant director, Raijieli Taga.

Ms Taga also confirmed samples of sand, rock, water and mud have been sent to the University of the South Pacific for testing.

“We have already submitted the samples. Right now I cannot comment on what it might be,” Ms Taga said.

Meanwhile, the turaga ni koro (village headman), Ratu Meciusela Telewa said the “oil” continued to surface around the area it was first spotted.

The “oil” was discovered by children from the village last Saturday while they were bathing near the estuary.
