Here On A Mission

Papua New Guinea XV women’s rugby team will leave no stone unturned as they take on the Fijiana XV tomorrow for the inaugural Oceania Rugby Women’s Championship at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.
The visitors have included six overseas based players to bolster their quest to participate in the Women’s Rugby World Cup in Dublin next year.
The players include Brisbane, Australia-based Dixon sisters Harkhana and Marlugu, Janina Stein, Tracy Stanis, Victoria Ca men and Montpellier, France, based Melanie Kawa.
Kawa, whose mother is Australian, has played with Queensland in the 2013 National Championships.
Last year she joined Montpellier Rugby Club in France. She became the first PNG woman to play rugby at the highest level in Europe.
The 29-year-old would no doubt be PNG’s trump card tomorrow.
Team manager Lydia Korikai said they were looking good for the much anticipated match against Fiji.
“All our overseas based players joined us in Fiji on Wednesday and we are happy to have all our players together in camp and also Kawa is looking good for the game.
“The girls are looking good for the game and even though we do not have enough time together back in PNG,
“Our local girls are blending in well with our overseas based players,” Korikai said.
“The majority of the PNG women are 7s players including captain Margaret Naua.
“We did not camp at home due to financial constraints but the whole country is behind us as we want to win and also qualify to the World Cup,” Korokai said.
