The mother of  murdered Losana McGowan says she is finally relieved that justice has finally been done.

Kelera McGowan was commenting after her daughter’s partner, Usaia Kilaiverata, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the High Court in Suva yesterday.

Kilaiverata was convicted on Wednesday for murdering McGowan, 32, in April last year.

Mrs McGowan said: “Justice has been served and that the expected sentence was finally given today.”

High Court Judge, Justice Priyantha Fernando, said it was a domestic violence case and that McGowan was kicked and punched in the face in the early hours of April 4 last year.

Justice Fernando said Kilaiverata would have to serve a minimum term of 18 years in prison before a pardon can be considered.

He said that Kilaiverata had voluntarily surrendered himself to Police and had also been in remand for 1 year and 7 months.

“Her death has really affected the family as there were only two of them in the family, but justice has been served today,” Mrs McGowan said.

Kilaiverata has 30 days to appeal his sentence.
