The Fiji Rugby Union yesterday released the names of the Telecom Fijiana team for the 2016 Oceania 7s Tournament.

The team sees two new girls forcing their way into the team, Asena Yalewalili and Ana Maria Naimasi after an intense four weeks in camp.

FRU chief executive officer John O’Connor said this is an indication that there are a lot of female players interested in rugby.

“The FRU Development Unit has been promoting the game of rugby to girls around the country through the GiR programme,”O’Connor said.

With girls now wanting to play, this shows that the interest has intensified and that the pool of female players is starting to grow.

“Congratulations to those that have been selected for the Oceania tournament and I would like to wish them all the best.”

The women’s championship will be played alongside the men’s championship on November 11-12  at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.

The women’s competition comprises of seven teams, Australia, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Cook Islands, Tonga, Solomon Islands and Fiji and will be played in one round robin pool with the top team after the round robin declared the winner.

Tickets for the Oceania Rugby Sevens Championships are on sale now and can be purchased from the FMF Gymnasium foyer in Suva.
