France-based Melanie Kawa believes on the need for more rugby competition for Pacific women to utilise the talents in the islands.

Kawa will start as a blindside flanker for the Palisia against the Fijiana XV in the inaugural Oceania Women’s Championship at the ANZ Stadium, Suva at 3pm today.

Kawa plays professional rugby with Montpellier rugby club in France and feels more Pacific women can play in professional rugby if talents are being identified and nurtured.

“I was fortunate enough to go over to France and now I’m happy to see the two Fijiana girls are in Northern France.”

Former Telecom Fijiana sevens reps Litia Naiqato and Luisa Tisolo are now playing for Stade Rennais rugby club.

“That’s what needs to happen. What we need to have is create more national competitions to identify more talents in the islands. With the help of Oceania rugby we can have more test matches.

“We can only build strength if we build up the best of the best in our region,” Kawa said.

“I would love to have friendly matches with Fiji and invite Tonga and Samoa. I would love to see some Fijian girls come to PNG sharing their knowledge and vice- versa so we can learn and grow.

“We haven’t really had enough time to train together but our first day in Fiji we really had three gruelling training sessions so we are in good shape.

“It’s a big occasion for both teams, excited to see how girls in the Pacific can do with rugby balls on the field,” she added.
