Help Police Nab Suspect Of Alleged Rape Of Teenager

The alleged rape of a 14-year-old Labasa school girl is the worst nightmare of any parent.

All parents and decent people are shocked and abhor the crime of rape.

The suspect in this case is alleged to be a taxi driver. If he is based in Labasa, it should not be hard to track him down. He could also possibly be from out of town, from Savusavu, Nabouwalu or even Viti Levu.

There’s no doubt that the Police are checking all leads which will move them closer to solving this mystery.

This incident bears some resemblance to the brutal rape of a student girl in Nakasi in July last year.

The Nakasi girl was going home after school, dragged to the bushes and raped.

The Labasa girl was on her way to school when she was allegedly picked up by a taxi driver, taken to a secluded spot and allegedly raped.

This incident has shocked the usually quiet town of Labasa. The reputation of Labasa as a safe and quiet town has suffered a serious setback. Already on radio talkback shows, the Labasa case is a serious topic of discussion. People are concerned, not only those from Labasa but from outside Labasa. They cannot rule it out happening in their neck of the woods. Nakasi, Labasa, what location is next?

Rape is a very serious crime. Victims go through a stressful and traumatic period after the crime is committed. For some they may find that it can take a very long time to re-adjust and cope with life. The mental, physical and spiritual effects of sexual assault and rape can negatively affect the daily lives of survivors. Recovery and healing then takes a long time.

Professional experts on this subject say that post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that is triggered by a terrifying event. Some common symptoms associated with PTSD are flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety and uncontrollable fear surrounding thoughts about the event. Many people who go through traumatic events have difficulty adjusting and coping for a while. But with time and support, victims can overcome such traumatic events and usually get better.

The Labasa girl and her family will no doubt receive counselling and assistance to cope with the trauma surrounding the event. Life will never be the same again for her and her family.

It’s a massive hill to climb to return to normalcy.

In the Nakasi rape case, the family had to relocate so that the victim could have a fresh start in life. That  was the choice of her family and they are happy where they live now. That was not a difficult decision because the family is not originally from where the crime took place.

It is understood that in the Labasa case, the family is from there.

The Police would need all the help they can get from the public to catch the suspect.

Someone might have seen or know of a vital clue that Wednesday morning that could lead the investigations to the suspect.

It is in of public interest that he is apprehended. The suspect could be a sexual predator, who is a danger to society and must be arrested and put behind bars.
