Focus On Skills To Tackle Violence Against Women

Improving officers’ skills in dealing with cases of violence against women and helping them understand gender dynamics will be the key issue today at the opening of the Police Regional workshop in Nadi.

Thirty Police officers will take part in the Regional Police Training Programme from 11 Pacific countries which is facilitated by the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) and funded by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) at the Hexagon Hotel from November 7-18.

The training will also help the officers understand gender dynamics as well as laws relating to gender-based violence.

The two-week training programme will also include:

understanding gender and how it relates to violence against women and girls;

understanding laws against gender-based violence and related legislation; and

improving the working relationships between police forces and organisations that work in the area of eliminating violence against women and girls.

About 80 officers have previously graduated from the regional training course.
