The Nauru men’s rugby 7s team are looking forward to battle against the Vodafone Fijian 7s team who are also the Rio Olympic Games gold medallist.

Nauru 7s coach, Dagan Kaierua told SUNsports last night that is what they want and being pooled together in the 2016 Oceania Rugby 7s Championship, they are looking forward to the encounter.

“We are looking forward to our training session here especially on a flat ground,” he said.

Kaierua said they have brought 12 players and four officials for the championship.

“The team have been training for the past three months on the rocky lands in Nauru and this has been a tough challenge for us.

“But it will not hinder our battle to go up the ranking in the sevens tournament and we are also aware that we are in a tough pool.”

He said they recently returned from Australia where they played in a sevens tournament as a build-up to the Oceania championship.

“We have sacrificed a lot towards our build-up.

“We do face a lot of challenges back at home as we do not have grass, we do not have a field but rocks and all.

“Basically, we have been playing touch rugby in terms of our preparation if we want to have tackle sessions we usually go to the sands.

“The morale is there as we know that this is our second year of participating in sevens rugby and this is only our third year of rugby back at home. So it’s a new sport.

“We know that we are facing Fiji, Samoa and Tonga, I think it’s very good for our team and the development of the sport in our country.”

Kaierua said basically they would put on a more physical approach because they are shorter as they don’t have tall players.

“On the skills level we are still developing since it’s very new but we just got to basically play rugby league style in this game.”
