The second leg of the Rip Curl Micro Grommet Series ended on a high note at the Swimming Pools Reef, Namotu Island on Saturday. Fiji Surfing Association coach Ian Portingale said the young surfers were traditionally welcomed at Nabila village.

“After that it was time to hit the waves,” Portingale said.

“With 56 eager competitors and support crew it took five boats to ferry everyone out to the Swimming Pools Reef. It was a magnificent day on the water.”

In near perfect conditions, the six divisions showcased the talent coming through for Fiji surfing. The Under-14 boys, was won by John Vasea, ahead of Ulaiasi Tukuna and Jone Sabasobo. The U12 boys, was won by Samuela Navuso while Saimoni Vakarusaba Jnr came in second. The U10 saw Kalama McKellar show plenty of talent to claim first place while Julius Campbell came second and Qavo Naulivou was third.

In the girls, Kiesha Wakeham claimed all three divisions. In the U14 girls she finished ahead of sister, Kayla and Filomena Vakarusabai came in third. In the U12, Kiesha held of Doris Round while Torika Twounimiora finished 3rd. Then in the U10 girls it was Kiesha ahead of Havana Kurop and Ulukilupete’s Kurop who got in third.

Portingale said Rip Curl provided the winners of the U14 boys and girls with a perpetual ceremony bowl.

“A new surfboard was donated to Linieta Ratuni selected by Vatuvara to encourage her to continue her surfing endeavours.”

Head judge Romeo McKellar was overwhelmed not only by the number of participants but the standard of surfing. He congratulated all the competitors for demonstrating such good skills and thanked Nabila villagers for their support on the day.

The FSA wishes to thank Rip Curl, Jack’s, Surfing Fiji Co, Bank South Pacific, McDonald’s and Vatuvara Island for their generous support of the series.
