Naleba created history by winning the 75th Northern Then India Valibar Sangam mini-convention tournament for the first time on Sunday night.

The Rohit’s Kaval Dealer and Y-Corner Electrical sponsored side beat Canform Industries/ Prakash Medical Tuatua 1-0 in the final at Subrail Park, Labasa. The winning goal was scored by star Labasa midfielder Edwin Sahayam in the 10th minute of the first half.

Jubilant Naleba coach Vincent Sahayam said the win was a proud moment for them as this was their first time to win the tournament.

“We had played in this tournament three times and twice we have played in the final,” he said.

“In 2013 we played against Tuatua and unfortunately we lost by one goal and this year we managed to beat that team. Edwin held the players together and made sure that they performed to their best.

“He is originally from Naleba and a primary school teacher by profession. We dedicate the win to all our players, sponsors and people from our village.”

Sahayam said the $1200 prize money was distributed among their 16 players.

“We will continue with the celebration this week and we thank all our sponsors who have backed us.”

The tournament organising chairman Arvin Raju said Edwin got the Best Player award.

“The Best Manager award was given to Subarmani Naidu of Namara TIV and the Golden Boot Award was awarded to Altaaf Sahib of Tuatua TIV for scoring the most goals.

“The four-day tournament ended well and I would like to thank our sponsors, co-sponsors, executives, Fiji Police Force and referees for their support,” he added.
