Mother Pleads With PRB To Consider Maintenance, Safety Of Flats

The mother of an infant who fell from a three storey building is pleading with the Public Rental Board to consider the maintenance and safety of their flats.
This is after Lavenia Emily’s seven-month-old baby, Setareki Kalaveti fell with a 37-year-old woman from the second storey at Block 1, PRB Flats in Mead Road, Nabua.
It is alleged that the railing which the woman leaned on while carrying the child, had broken. The incident happened on Sunday.
Ms Emily said she was shocked when she heard people screaming that her baby and the woman fell to the ground from the second floor.
“When I ran outside, it was too late they were already on the ground.
“I ran downstairs and I carried my baby who was motionless at the time and his eyes were closed,” she said.
Ms Emily claimed the railings were faulty well before the incident happened and is asking PRB to look into this matter seriously.
“I am pleading to them to consider the maintenance and safety of the flats because there are a lot of children in the flats and when we lodge complaints for them to respond to it on a timely manner.”
PRB acting general manager Patrick Veu said they were conducting their own investigations before a report would be submitted to the PRB Board of Directors.
Mr Veu said PRB conducted general maintenance checks on a five to seven year cycle and the Mead Road rental estate is scheduled for 2018.
Meanwhile, Ms Emily yesterday said her baby has shown positive recovery and recounts this ordeal as a miracle.
