Trial Ship Run For Beqa And Near By Islands

The Government Shipping Services has made another trial run to the island of Beqa, Yanuca and Vatulele last Sunday.

GSS director Josese Lawaniyasana said they started with this initiative last year.

The purpose of their trial, he said was just to see if it was viable or not.

He said they had planned to make trips to these islands quarterly.

“The last three trips last year were viable.”

After Tropical Cyclone Winston Mr Lawaniyasana said they were not able to make any trips to these islands as all government vessels were engaged to cyclone affected areas.

The Landing Craft and Tanker (LCT) Vunilagi was used in the three last trips, this year the Motor Landing Craft (MLC) Vatulawa was available for their fourth trial.

Mr Lawaniyasana said some passenger just loaded their cargoes and informed their families in the island about it.

Fiji Sun sent queries to the department of Infrastructure Transport and Policy if they were planning to make a franchise run to these islands. The ministry said – “No, trips to these three islands are only on government run. This is only government help to these islands in loading and transporting of their cargoes.’

For franchise run, it is not in their plan.

This route has not been serviced by other private sector. Passengers from these three islands always transport their cargoes by fiber from their main land to Navua town with a very high freight being charged.

Mr Inoke Vasu from Beqa says government run is cheaper than using private fiber from their island to Navua or from Navua back to the island.
