The 11th Fiji Human Resources Institute (FHRI) National Convention 2016 gets underway today at the Warwick Fiji.

The theme for the two-day event is: “Human Capital: Profitable Investment”.

It will be opened by the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Jone Usamate.

Institute President, Balbeer Singh, has said they have a very good mix of local and foreign speakers and are expecting more than 100 delegates.===

He said the idea is to get organisations to understand how important people for their business.

Tomorrow, FHRI will have their annual general meeting following which they will have the dinner in the evening.

During the dinner, they will be launching their HR Practitioners Awards.

Usually the awards were held together with the convention but from this year, they will have a separate event.

FHRI is looking to have gala awards dinner night sometimes in April.

Jonathan Cartmell (Consultant Director HR – Fiji National University)

Topic: The Role of Universities In Developing Human Capital


Jonathan joined Fiji National University in October after 10 years with Georgetown University, a leading US research intensive University, with campuses in Washington DC and Qatar as well as Centres in various European locations.

He headed up the HR function at the Qatar campus for seven years as well as running several others of major university functions. Prior to working in the Higher Education, he has nearly 20 years of HR professional experience with multinational companies including, Unilever, Rank Organisation, CSC and FedEx.

He has worked in several geographical regions including Europe, Asia- Pacific and the Middle East, Indian Sub-Continent and Africa.

This has honed his skills as an international business leader and human resource professional




Daksesh Patel (Managing Director – Mesh & Bar Pty Ltd)

Topic: Human Capital: Profitable Investment


Daksesh Patel was born and brought up in Ba. He completed his undergraduate degree in Commerce in NSW and later undertook and completed MBA programme from Massey University in NZ.

He worked as a graduate management trainee at Asian paints in India for 12 months before starting a permanent role in the family business, the Vinod Patel Group wherein his father Mr Vinod Patel was both the founder and Chairman of the group.

In 1997, Mr Patel left the family business and migrated to Australia. A few years ago when Mr Vinod Patel retired from all executive roles and from the executive board of Vinod Patel Group, he joined the family business as an adviser to the executive Board of VP and also acted as a Chairman of the executive board till the Board was able to appoint a permanent chairman.

Given his strong affection to Fiji, he accepted the invitation from the Government of Fiji to become one of the commissioners of the Public Service Commission Board. Mr Patel is also the chairman of FEA.



Ronald Prasad (Chief Commercial Officer – Vodafone Fiji)
Topic: How is Cloud & Technology shaping the future of HR

Ronald Prasad is the Chief Commercial Officer for Vodafone Fiji.
He heads the Corporate, ICT & Business Marketing function and has been with Vodafone for the past nine years.
He holds various qualifications including Undergraduate, Post Graduate and an MBA from the University of the South Pacific.
Born and bred in Fiji, Mr Prasad has worked for multinationals such as ExxonMobil and prior to joining the Corporate World.
He spent his early days in the Public Sector, working for the Judiciary and Legal Aid.
