NZ Stint For Ah-Yuk

Zane Ah-Yuk, 17, could not believe his luck when he found out he would get a scholarship to study and play hockey in New Zealand.
For someone who has been part of the Geotech Marist hockey family playing the sport since the age of seven, he says he did not expect such a huge opportunity to come his way. He will be the second from the club to get a hockey scholarship.
Coming from a family of national reps he hopes to make his family proud when he leaves for New Zealand in January.
“I come from a sporting family, my mother Ana Finau and Tailah Ah Yuk both played and represented Fiji in hockey whereas my dad used to play basketball,” Zane said.
“I’m really excited about this scholarship and would like to thank my parents and club for helping me get this scholarship and also for their support.”
Geotech Marist Hockey vice- president Paul Fraser said since the first club scholarship recipient was a success they were able to send another member.
“The first player to be sent on an overseas scholarship from our club was Owen Smith and since he is doing so well academically and sporting- wise, they had given another scholarship. We believe Zane is the right person and know that he will make it all the way.
“The club identified his potential and through our contacts in New Zealand managed to secure a hockey scholarship at Kelston Boys High School in Auckland.”
He added they were proud of the progress of their young players and with the success of their recipients they could lead the way to get others across to New Zealand.
