Girmitiyas Helped Growth In Ba, Veena Bhatnagar Tells Town

Veena Bhatnagar yesterday acknowledged the hard work of Girmitiyas and their descendants for the growth and development of Ba Town.
The Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation said it was wonderful to see the people of Ba gathered at the Centennial Girmit Celebrations. She was speaking at the celebrations at the Market Grounds in Ba yesterday,
“As we all know, the history of the Girmitiyas is also the history of Ba,” Ms Bhatnagar said.
“Some of the Girmit descendants of the SS Sutlej are with us today in Ba, and I bring you special greetings on behalf of every Fijian.”
She said this was a commemoration of the contribution to the nation not only by their ancestors but of the descendants as well.
“Through their efforts, not only did the economic life of the region prospered, but Ba – and the surrounding area – grew, until it was eventually proclaimed a town in 1939,” she said.
“In 2014, when Ba Town celebrated its 75th anniversary, there was a specific acknowledgement for the immense contribution made the Girmit pioneers. And we again acknowledge that contribution, and thank you for all you have done.
“The legacy of those indentured labourers – the Girmitiyas – can be seen throughout Fijian society to this day. It not only lives on in their descendants, but the determined, tenacious spirit of the Girmitiyas serves as a source of inspiration for every Fijians.”
The people who attended the function participated in the float procession and had a fun learning day.
