We must remember the contributions of our ancestors, Minister for Health and Medical Services Rosy Akbar said last night.

“Their story has been told many times and all of us have some links to the Girmitiyas,” she said.

Ms Akbar was speaking during the Girmit Celebrations at Vashist Muni College in Navua.

“They made life better for us and our country and for that we all need to be proud of them.

‘The story of SS Sutlej goes back and marks the end 100 years of the transportation of indentured labours from British India to Fiji,” she said.

“Those that went back, went back but those that stayed back, they are the very reason we are here today.

“If they would have decided to go back, we would not have been here today.

“I am proud of the forefathers who decided to stay back and I am proud to be part of Fiji.

“That legacy has made Fiji a very proud nation today and regardless of what they went through, regardless of their living conditions, the hard work they did, the punishment that they suffered, that they went through to complete their task and their struggle needs to be celebrated,” she said.
