The Cook Islands women’s sevens coach Crystal Kaua believes playing against top Oceania nations will help boost the side in the future.

Cook Islands recorded their second win in the Oceania 7s tournament thrashing Solomon Islands 57-0 at the ANZ Stadium yesterday.

“We are just playing it one game at a time but it has been getting tougher,” Kaua said.

“We just want to go in and play the game under pressure and I think if we can learn against  good quality teams then it is good for the girls in the long term.”

Kaua has been impressed with the teams in the tournament, mainly Papua New Guinea (PNG) who beat them 12-7.

“I take my hat off to PNG, I thought they really had a solid game and they were fast and fit,” she said.

“They got up in our face and that was a really good learning curve for us as a coach and for the players as well.

“I have been really impressed with our first game and our third game. I love playing this type of rugby.

“It’s good for the girls to play against all the island teams, it’s a real close knit community and we have so much respect for the other teams.”

With a team that boasts both experienced and young players, Kaua said the girls have been learning a lot from the competition.

“I am happy with how they played,” Kaua said.

“We managed to get our whole bench  game time so it was a really good learning curve for the girls.

“Our squad is a mix of experienced and new players which is good. We have four new girls in the team and it is their first time playing for the Cook Islands.

“It has been really great watching them play and soaking up all that experience against other teams.”
