Tonga achieved their main objective after qualifying for the Hong Kong 7s tournament next year.

Tonga finished in fifth place beating Cook Islands 19-0 at the ANZ Stadium in Suva yesterday.

Team manager Filo Akauola said though they were aiming for Wellington and Sydney 7s, they are satisfied with going to Hong Kong.

“We are so happy that we have qualified to play in Hong Kong, we were aiming for Wellington and Sydney but this is the one that will really count because going to Hong Kong is the pathway to the World Sevens Series,” Akauola said.

“We achieved within these past two days what we have been doing for the past three months.

“Now we are looking forward to Hong Kong.

“We have achieved what we came here to do and that is to qualify.”

With a young squad at his disposal, Akauola said he intends to keep the side for the Hong Kong tournament unless there is a need to make changes.

“As soon as we go home, we will continue sevens rugby in Tonga and I am aiming to keep the same boys for the Hong Kong tournament,” he said.

“They are young, they have the ability to do the job and it is a new start for them unless there are more players with specific skills.”
