Close to 200 vegetable, dalo, yaqona and cassava farmers in Vatukuca, Savusavu, are already reporting an improvement in access to markets.

This comes with the current upgrade of the 2.6kilometre Vatukuca Road on the Natewa West Coast, according to Fulton Hogan Hiways (FHH) Savusavu Depot Supervisor, Pradeep Singh.

The upgrade is part of the company’s commitment to service roads in the Northern Division under the Fiji Roads Authority Maintenance Programme.

An eight-man crew, Mr Singh said, was grading and re-sheeting the road with gravel as well as removing overgrown vegetation and improving drainage. Vatukuca is 32 kilometres from Savusavu Town.

The road, which links to the Natewa West Coast Road, serves four villages in Vatukuca with a total population of more than 1500 residents.

Maikeli Raiwai, who is a vegetable and dalo farmer in Vatukuca, expressed relief at the road upgrade.

“Taking our produce to the Savusavu Market and even with children going to school will now be much easier,” he said.
