Fiji has been recently securing rights to host a number of international sporting events and it is part of Tourism Fiji’s strategies to keep tourism numbers up during off peak times.

Tourism Fiji chief executive, Mathew Stoeckel says sport tourism is an increasing and important part of Tourism Fiji’s strategy.

“It is part of our strategy where we look to grow visitation in off peak periods and no show periods such as November and we get a lot of direct benefit from having it,” Mr Stoeckel said.

Speaking at the press conference of 2016 Fiji ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship on Saturday at Port Denarau Marina on Denarau Island, Mr Stoekel said the championship had brought to Fiji more than more than 246 competitors who will be spending on accommodation, restaurants and bar as well.

In other words, sports get tourists on our shores in large numbers.

“But it’s not just the direct expenditure that we get from the event like this we also generate a lot of publicity see through public relations and media and also through the web cast which will go to the global audience.” he said.

And that’s very important to us because our visitors come from all over the world and all over the world where SUP is a growing sport.

“So strategically because Fiji is also a paradise for water sports so SUP is another sports that supplements our diving here, outstanding snorkelling world class surfing and other water sports we have got here as well.’’

He also stated that the events as such were important event for them to generate a lot of publicity and a lot of media exposure.

He said people would see the broadcasts done by the organisers of the SUP Champion and come here and explore Fiji.
