The new ship service by Goundar Shipping Limited from Natuvu to Lovonivonu in Taveuni will be a boost for economy in Taveuni.

Commissioner Northern Joseva Vocea said economy in Taveuni has started to grow after the devastation by cyclone Winston the island.

He said tourism was back and business from Labasa and Taveuni was growing.

The two trips a day by the Lomaiviti IV would be good especially when the vessel would also be carrying vehicles.

Currently he said the route was serviced by a small boat that could not carry vehicles.

The Lomaiviti IV he says will also be providing competition for the vessel that currently serves the route.

Meanwhile Goundar Shipping Limited new vessel the Lomaiviti IV is now on its way from South Korea to Fiji.

This was confirmed to the Fiji Sun by the company managing director George Goundar from South Korea.

In his message he said – “The Lomaiviti IV left South Korea for Fiji today, November 11 under the command of Cpt Inoke Ratotodro.”

The cost of the refitting the new vessel to comply with the Fiji Marine Act was $617,600 .

Expected time of arrival (ETA) to Fiji he says is November 30.

However he said this would depend on the weather.

He said it would take 20 days for the Lomaiviti IV to arrive in Fiji.

Helping Cpt Ratotodro are two engineers, Mr Muniappan Naidu and Mr Bret Newton and six crews including Mr Goundar who is an engineer by profession.

In an earlier interview Mr Goundar had confirmed that the Lomaiviti IV would be servicing the Natuvu to Lovonivonu, Taveuni route.

The vessel will service new route making two trips one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

“It will be easy for the people in Labasa to do business in Taveuni and go back on the same day,” he said.

A bus company in Savusavu has agreed to provide daily services from Labasa to Taveuni daily.

Currently there is no ship service from Natuvu to Lovonivonu but is served by fibre

Now the Goundar Shipping Limited has four vessels – Lomaiviti I, Lomaiviti II, Lomaiviti III and Lomaiviti IV.
