Hosts Labasa One are holding a slight lead over Taveuni in the overall medal tally of the Northern Chow Games that got underway at Subrail Park, Labasa, yesterday.

Athletics Fiji’s database and website administrator, Eugene Vollmer said Taveuni are leading the boy’s category with three gold, two silver and two bronze medals while Labasa One are leading the girl’s category with four gold medals, one silver and one bronze.

“There is a lot of competition and we are glad that this is the first time for such event to be held in the North and it will be a memorable one for all participants,” Vollmer said.

Labasa One manager Lepani Waqavesi said they have 112 students from six different schools.

“Our aim is to win the overall competition by getting more medals. This is the first time to have the Northern Chow Games and we want to create history.”

Taveuni head coach Joeli Mataivolau said they came to Labasa with the aim to win.

“We came to this event trying to be resilient after what Cyclone Winston had done to our island. Also to show to the people that we can bounce back after going through so much difficulties and we have proven that. We have a team of 82 students from eight different primary schools.”

The competition continues today
