The bravery of a 25-year-old mother saving her two children from their burning home in Tomanu Road, Nadera, was yesterday commended by Veena Bhatnagar.

The Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation yesterday visited Swetha Nand and her family who lost two houses along with all their belongings in a fire on Tuesday.

Ms Nand was at her two-bedroom home with her two-year-old daughter and seven-month-old baby when the fire started spreading to the neighbouring three-bedroom house, which belonged to her mother-in-law.

She managed to successfully escape with her two children after she heard a loud explosion.

Ms Bhatnagar, while sympathising with the family, said Ms Nand’s prompt act saved the life of her children.

“You saved both of your children in time which is a brave and a courageous act,” she told Ms Nand.

“When people lose their homes, they lose their lives, their memories which took years to build.”

Ms Bhatnagar also presented two $1000 cheques to the two families on behalf of her ministry to assist them with their immediate needs.

She said the swift response by her ministry was made after they read the report in yesterday’s Fiji Sun.
