Team FlameTree won the major team prize during the Fiji Classic, which is Denarau Game and Sports Fishing Clubs premiere event, over the weekend.

On board Opulence, the team also qualified to compete at the Offshore World Championships (OWC) competition in Costa Rica next year.

Top angler was Sam Daw with 900 points (tagging and releasing three Marlins) on board Reel Game and top female angler was Kay Cole (35.1 points) on board Tangaroa.

Top junior angler was Christian D’Intinosante (92.4 point) on board Belmare.

Heaviest Species Most Bill Fish 900 points – Sam Daw on Reel Game, Heaviest Yellow Fin 58.7kg – Maio on Synergy, Heaviest Mahi Mahi Hoggy on Lunasea, Heaviest Skipjack Tuna – Scotty on Lunasea and Heaviest Walu – Alan Brown on Opulance.

DGSFC media liaison Marc McElrath said they had signed up local teams and guys from Kiribati, New Zealand and Australia and interest from the Marshall Islands and Vanuatu.

“What a weekend of fishing we had.  This was one of the clubs biggest competitions that we have ever held with 20 registered boats and 93 anglers,” he said.

“We would like to thank all participants from Fiji and abroad for making the trip Denarau to join us for this prestigious event.  Thanks again for all participation and we look forward to next year.”

He said who wouldn’t want to go to Costa Rico and mix it up with some of the best anglers from around the globe.

George Trinkler took out the individual World Championship last year while the team finished 7th overall what a great result for a small island nation in Pacific.
