Eighteen-year-old George Rounds is the first in his family to take out the highest academic prize at Lomary Catholic Secondary School prizegiving in Galoa, Serua, yesterday.

George’s mother, Salome Rounds, 51, said she was on cloud nine when she saw her youngest son won the Dux award.

“George is my youngest and the first one in the family to win this award and today he has made me the proudest mother,” Ms Rounds said.

George also took home four certificates and four trophies.

He was raised and supported by his mother and three older siblings at their Nakoba settlement in Galoa, after his father died in 2014.

He scored 348 out of 400 in his annual examination, which catapulted him to the top. He also won best prizes in accounting, economics, and office technology – including the first prize in Year 13.

George said being the youngest after the died of their dad; he drew inspiration from his mother and brothers.

“I give all the credit and this Dux Award to my mother because of her I am here at this stage of life.

“She has encouraged me and pushed me beyond my limits to work hard and score good examination results and make her and my late father proud.”
