Latter-day Saints (LDS) Primary School Year Six student Sereana Vulaono scooped the top awards yesterday.

It was a proud moment for Vulaono when she received the Dux and sportswoman award during the annual prizegiving.

“I am so thankful to my parents and teachers for their support.

“I never planned to receive both awards but I am feeling happy,” she said.

The 12-year-old said the competition was really tough and she was really surprised when her name was called out for the Dux award.

“It was not easy to balance my schoolwork and sports but, my parents especially my father guided me.

“My father always told me if I want my schoolwork and sports to go together, I have to be disciplined, not to show off and work hard,” he said.

Her father Jone Tanivula is a former rugby player now a construction worker.

Vulaono will join LDS College next year.

“It was always my dream to become a nurse so that I could help sick people,” she said.

Vulaono also received prize for scoring the highest mark in mathematics.

Best sportsman award recipient Suliasi Kelemeti said: “I am happy to win the award.”

“I want to dedicate this award to my parents who have always guided me,” he said.
