It’s a different atmosphere when it comes to Marist volleyball: Coach

After being banned last year, Black Hawks are excited to be back this year for the 9th Bula FM Marist Volleyball tournament which started yesterday at the Vodafone Arena and FMF Gymnasium, Suva.

Coach Viliame Lewanavanua said they aim to win the prestigious tournament.

“It is a different atmosphere when it comes to Marist Volleyball, it is one of the biggest competitions and we are just happy to be a part of it,” Lewanavanua said.

“Competition has been really tough and it is getting tougher every year, before it used to be 32 teams taking part but now it’s the best 24 and so getting to the top will not be easy.

“Last year we were banned from the tournament, some incidents occurred last year in Nadi during the build-up competition between our club and Marist officials.

“We were banned from playing and we were banned from entering the premises, so you can see how serious they are and how serious they take their tournaments.

“We were allowed to come back this year and it feels really good to be back. I feel like we have something to prove now and we want to do that on the court.”

With Marist and Rebels dominating the tournament in the men’s category for a while now, Lewanavanua said they want to be the third team to team win the tournament.

“Rebels and Marist have always been dominating the tournament but we want to change that this year,” he said.

“Our aim is to break that norm and be up there with them. I am confident that the boys can do this, it may not be this year or next year but I am confident that we will be up there one day.

“We have been together for five years and the boys have improved really well over the years they have been together.”

The 9th Bula FM Marist Volleyball tournament will finish today.
