The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has put a stop to the selection of overseas- based players to represent the Telecom Fijian Warriors and the Vodafone Fijian Under-20 teams in future. The FRU confirmed yesterday as from now only local-based players are eligible to represent the Warriors and U20 teams.

The move is seen as an investment by FRU on local players, who have their allegiance to later play for the Vodafone Fijian 7s team or the Vodafone Flying Fijians and this will benefit Fiji Rugby on the long term.

Also, it is expected to further boost the provincial rugby competition, Skipper Cup Under-20 showdown and the Coke Zero Deans Trophy battle, which involves secondary schools around the country.

“By playing for the Warriors and Fijian Under-20 teams will give local players the much-needed exposure especially when they participate during overseas tours or World Rugby sanctioned tournaments,” stated FRU.

It is the understood for the past years many of the local U20 players had been dropped as preferences were given to overseas-based players. However, some of these overseas-based players used the opportunity and experience gained as a stepping stone to attaining a Super Rugby contract before switching their allegiance to play for either, Australia, New Zealand, England or France.
