The province of Nadroga/Navosa is in the process of upgrading the staff of Early Childhood Education training in the province. This is the result of implementing a proposal that was passed yesterday at the provincial council meeting.

The proposal by provincial education committee chairman Reverend Orisi Terei was passed by the members during the meeting at Nahigatoka village in Nadroga.

“We have noted that most of our kindergarten teachers that have been teaching are without certificates,” Reverend Terei said.

“They have the passion to teach and help our youngsters develop Early Childhood Education, so we will be upskilling our kindergarten teachers in all our 22 districts.

“The challenge that we face is communities are paying them, the teachers do it out of passion but the Government cannot pay them because they do not have qualifications.

“That is the reason we brought this recommendation up for the council.”

Reverend Terei said the short courses would be conducted by the unit of the Technical and Further Education from the University of the South Pacific for two weeks and would help to develop and qualify the pre-school teachers.

He said the provincial education committee would be underwriting the project.
