Runway Cleared For B737 Operations

Nausori International Airport has been given the green light for a B737 aircraft operation.

This was announced by the Airports Fiji Limited and Fiji Airways.

Fiji Airways managing director and chief executive Andre Viljoen said they are vey relieved that the runway surface is now suitable again for our B737 aircraft.

“This allows us to reinstate our direct services to Suva from Sydney and Auckland,” he said.

“We know the past few weeks have been most inconvenient for all our affected guests.

“We completely empathise and reiterate our safety first approach in all situations.

He said they are glad to resume direct services from Suva to Auckland and Sydney, subject to weather conditions being conducive to safe flight operations.

AFL contractors have successfully concluded and tested the sealant and repair works on the airport’s runway, and Fiji Airways has verified its suitability for B737 operations.

Some limitations and restrictions will apply, however, including in situations of inclement weather and high runway temperatures.

AFL executive chairman Faiz Khan added: “The recommencement of B737 operations out of Nausori is a highly positive news for all after the last two months’ challenges.

“The works carried out by our Australian contractor in sealing cracks was deemed defective, requiring remedial works,” said Mr Khan.

He further said they understand the frustrations of the public and repeat that safety is our paramount concern.

“Looking forward we are glad for the resumption of services by Fiji Airways.”

The runway has been closed for B737 aircraft since September 25
