Dominiko Rokomaqisa of Suva One took out the gold medal in the Under-14 boys’ high jump. He jumped 1.58metres in the Central Division FMF Chow Games at the ANZ Stadium, Suva yesterday.

The 14-year-old lad from Ono in Vabea, Kadavu came fourth last year but said he was surprised to finish first this year.

“I really wasn’t expecting to come first and win gold, when I jumped that last bar my heart almost skipped a beat when I cleared it,” Rokomaqisa said. “Knowing that I finished fourth last year, I wanted to improve that record and maybe finish third or even second. I trained hard and gave it my best and that I have won gold is a proud and unbelievable moment for me.”

Rokomaqisa said he could not have achieved all that without the help of his coach Edward Rounds.

“My coach helped me through my training and inspired me to give my best. “Winning gold in my final year in primary school is something special and I will continue to take high jump and hope to get even better.”

Meanwhile, in the U13 girl’s high jump, Sisilia Elenoa Tukidia won gold for Suva One with a jump of 1.40m.
