Veteran forward Pio Tuwai is fighting his way back to make the Vodafone Fijian 7s team to the 2016-17 World Sevens Series which starts on December 2-3 in Dubai

Yesterday, Tuwai led the McDonald’s Saunaka Red during the Vutia District School Old Scholars 7s tournament showing his famous offloading skills to the delight of the village fans.

He said returning to sevens after a long break was a good start in his fightback to fly the Fijian flag again.

He is in the national training squad for the upcoming World Sevens Series and is optimistic of retaining his spot.

Tuwai missed the cut to the 2016 Rio Olympics due to injury.

“Even though it’s been long I’m glad I’m doing what I love best. I just joined the Saunaka team last week,” Tuwai said.

“I know there have been new faces in the squad. With new boys and new style of play but I’m ready for the challenge.

“I know I got what it takes to be in the team because I have been training hard.

“I know the competition and training will be tough but I can adapt. I’ve recovered from injuries and I’m raring to play.”

The Vodafone Fijian 7s squad return to camp at Uprising Beach Resort in Pacific Harbour this week.
