For the first time Veiuto Primary School took out the girl’s category in the Central Division FMF Chow Games at the ANZ Stadium, Suva yesterday. They took home 16 gold medals, 10 silver and five bronze.

Since pulling out of the Suva Two zone, VPS teachers decided to represent themselves at the Games in order to have a wider selection base of selection.

“While most schools were against the idea of representing themselves, Veiuto stuck to their decision and it has turned out to be a positive one,” said VPS head coach, Owen Ratumaikoro.

“I’m proud of the girls and for the hard work they have put in,” Ratumaikoro said.

“We dedicate this victory to Lord God Almighty. He has been our source of inspiration and strength.

“We have talked to some teachers and I believe they are going to follow our footsteps next year.

“That was the main objective this year, to give ourselves a wide base selection when the nationals come back and for the girls to come in strongly and win is just the icing on the cake. Last year during the nationals, the western districts came in strongly. Nadroga took the girls title and Suva barely won the boy’s title.

“So I thought this year we would put it up to the Suva schools if we could go to the Central Division games on school base so when we come back to perform at the nationals they have a wider base for selection. Unfortunately other schools did not get on board with the idea but we tried it and obviously it has worked.” Ratumaikoro said if they can do the unthinkable than other schools can do it too, as long as a lot of hard work goes into it.
