While people are drawn to the white sandy beaches for a day of recreation, a Tailevu North villager offers the serenity of lush and green bushes with a waterfall to beat the heat this season.

Spotted from the main road on the way to Rakiraki, 10 minutes from Korovou Town, the one of its kind waterfall is a great picnic spot at Dakuivuna, Wainibuka.

Former Republic of Fiji Military Force soldier and solo parent of four young boys, Urupeni Senibulu, said the waterfall attraction was the only source of income for his family.

Mr Senibulu charges a minimal fee of $1 per head for locals, $2 a head for overseas tourists while the bathroom facilities can be visited at $0.50.

“My wife passed away in 2009 and since then I have raised my boys alone with the money collected from the picnic spot,” Mr Senibulu said.

“What all I earn from the waterfall picnic spot is all I have to provide my family with.

“I have invested in building toilet facilities as well as walkways to the waterfall stream for better convenience of many.

“This is God’s creation of a beautiful waterfall and the only picnic spot between Korovou and Rakiraki.

“During the holiday season, in Christmas and Easter holidays, I usually have close to 400 or 500 people who take advantage of beating the heat with the cool stone waterfall.

“I get a lot of tourists who want to spend the night over but unfortunately I don’t have that facility to provide them with this,” he said.

“I have requested the Government to assist me with the development so we can have more tourist attractions in the Eastern side of Viti Levu.”
