A former Post Fiji employee who allegedly set fire to the Seaqaqa Post office was denied bail by the Labasa Magistrate Court yesterday.

Magistrate Thushara Thennakoon also transferred the case to be heard at the High Court in Labasa today.

Former clerk, Artika Anjani, has been charged with one count of theft, one count of money laundering and one count of arson.

It is alleged that Anjani had stolen more than $40,000 and was sending the money overseas not realising she was getting caught in an online scam.

When she failed to get her money back she allegedly set fire to the Post Office to cover her tracks.

The 36-year-old mother, represented by her lawyer Ami Kohli of Kohli and Singh Solicitors and Barristers, appeared before Magistrate Thennakoon.

Mr Kohli requested if his client could be released on bail with the sum of $10,000.

He said Anjani was able to provide two sureties and promised to appear on all court dates.

Mr Kohli also requested if the case could remain in the lower court instead of transferring it to the High Court.

Northern Divisional Police Prosecutor Inspector Subramani Naidu objected to the bail application saying that it was a serious offence.

Inspector Naidu then suggested the case should be transferred to the High Court.

Magistrate Thennakoon declined the bail application and ordered the case to be moved to the High Court today.

Anjani has been further remanded in Police custody.
