Where there are distractions, Adi Salamalawa Korosaya says, she chews gum to help her focus on her study.

She revealed her study habits after she won the Dux shield at the Holy Trinity Anglican School’s prizegiving ceremony yesterday at the Suva Civic Centre.

“I study when there is not a lot of noise around the house and the only way I remember things is through chewing gum,” she said.

Her bright smile lit up the room as she expressed how glad she felt about her awards.

“I also feel emotional because this is my last year in primary school,” she said.

Adi Salamalawa is brought up in a family that follows strict Christian values and always emphasises the importance of putting God first.

“The greatest challenge I faced was to balance time at school, sports and other activities organised by the school,”  she said.

“I could not concentrate at school but my parents always encouraged me to keep moving forward despite the challenges that I face.”

The 13-year-old girl paid tribute to her parents for her success because they had always been there for her.

“Whenever I experience challenges in life, they are always there to support me and that is the reason why I had to work hard to live up to their expectations,” she said.

She almost gave up on her hobby to play netball during the first term of this school year.

“I had trouble balancing my school work so I told my parents that I wanted to give it up but they advised me not to because in that way, I will be able to work harder and balance my time,” she said.

She advises young people that if they want to become the Dux, then they would have to work hard and learn what to prioritise in life.
