The Hong Kong women’s rugby is looking forward to the clash against the Fijiana XV in the 2017 Women’s Rugby World Cup play off on December 9.

Coach Jo Hull told SUNsports this is a great opportunity for Hong Kong, Fiji and Japan to come together and play each other for the first time.

“We are definitely looking forward to playing against Fiji as it will be the first time we play them,” Hull said.

“It is a fantastic opportunity that only two places are available for the World Cup and that we all have a chance to compete for a place. We are pleased to be hosting this tournament. We have the domestic club season which is great and also an annual competition which is the Asian Rugby championship, so we are lucky to be having a lot of tournaments.”

Hull said they have reviewed footage of Fiji’s 37-10 defeat of Papua New Guinea (PNG) two weeks ago.

“We saw some footage of Fiji’s game against PNG and let me say, I think it was great that the Fijians got to play their first match in their home ground. We know that Fiji will not be a walk in the park, they play a very physical game and are good in their offloads.

“We have seen what they are capable of and we are doing our best to prepare well for our first game against them. We are aware that rugby is in the blood in Fiji so they understand the game quite well, Fiji are big and strong, so we need to go into that first game knowing how we want to play against them. We haven’t played them before in fifteens and that will pose some challenges in our preparations. Our focus, just like Japan and Fiji, would be on qualifying for the World Cup but we are excited and cannot wait for next month.”

Hull is a former Scotland Rugby Union performance manager from 2006 – 2012 and was the assistant coach for Scotland women’s team at the 2006 Rugby World Cup.

Fiji will play Hong Kong on December 9 and Japan on December 13.
