Schuster: Fiji Can Host World Sevens Series

After the success of the Oceania Rugby 7s championship, Fiji is more than capable of hosting other international tournaments, such as a World Sevens Series leg.

These were the sentiments from Oceania 7s tournament director and Oceania Rugby competitions manager Wayne Schuster.

“We are under no illusion and have no doubt that Fiji are more than capable of hosting a HSBC world series leg or a world under-20 rugby championship trophy for that matter, we also have the World Rugby women’s world cup,” Schuster said.

“These are tournaments that can be realistically hosted here in Fiji.  What was put together with the Marist Rugby Club and Fiji Rugby Union, is just a positive snapshot of what could be achieved and easily put together to ensure that these tournaments are held here. Fiji is ready to take the next step and are more than capable of hosting some of the major tournaments. The feedback we have received and the experience we have received from teams and obviously our observation and our views on how it was put together is only positive. Let’s get a few of these tournaments here and run them well, there is no reason why we can’t get those tournaments here.

“We are obviously pushing it from our end, from a regional perspective.”

Schuster said they are pleased with the organisation of the Oceania 7s tournament and the feedbacks from the teams have been positive.

“We are proud to say that the Oceania Rugby 7s championship was a huge success. We are very happy in terms of the quality of rugby that was on display at the stadium as well as the organisation component of the tournament which was really well done.

“Both aspects were truly world class and something we are quite delighted with. We feel this is very reflective of the support that we have received here in Fiji to deliver the Oceania 7s.

“In terms of the feedbacks we have received from the teams, it has been overwhelmingly positive, especially on the social media platform.

“The Australian teams have been tweeting their experience they tweeted strongly about the facilities that we have here which is just fantastic,” he added.
