Every 15-year-old student would probably spend their spare time with friends or do things that a normal high school teenager would do.

But for a Year 10 student of Suva Grammar School, Fortune Akinremi, he spends his spare time studying robots and robotic systems.

The lad from Nigeria yesterday received the Year 10 prize for his class and the overall Year 10 top award during the school’s 2016 annual awards in Suva.

His younger brother, Blossom Akinremi, 14, was also awarded the Year 9 top student prize for his class.

“To achieve your dream, you need to start with the small things, at this age I have already set out what I want to become in the future, that is to be a robotics engineer,” Fortune said.

“I grew up in an environment where science is involved. My father is involved in the medical field and I have relatives who are in that field too, but I want to do something different like robotics engineering, something out of the ordinary.”

Fortune said science subjects were his favourite in school and he hopes to excel in them while he works towards becoming a robotics engineer in the future.

He said Fiji was no different from Nigeria as the weather and the people were quite similar.

Apart from his school work, Fortune said he would take time out researching and studying robots.

“I love robots that is why I spend my spare time studying them and this is one way to keep me focused,” he said.

He hopes to design robots and robotic systems that would one day substitute human labour, which would become handy in this modern society.

His father is currently an Associate Professor at the Fiji National University’s College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Science.

Professor Ayodele Akinremi said it was a proud day for their family to see their sons excel academically in an environment they were totally new to.
