The parents of Faheemah Begum were in tears when she attributed her Arts Dux award to them during the Labasa Sangam College prizegiving yesterday.

The 18-year-old said her parents’ toil in the sugarcane field motivated her – making their wishes come true.

“My parents at times would sit with me and recall their times of struggle and wishes that my brother and I would not go through it again,” Faheemah said.

“The education back then was different from what we are having now.”

The aspiring chartered accountant of Wailevu, Labasa, scored 350 out of 400.

Her mother, Mehnaaz Begum, 41, said Faheemah was her only daughter and she would always worry about her safety and education.

“These days it is very important that girls become educated,” Mrs Begum said.

“I always teach my daughter to study with dignity; don’t do anything to bring shame to the family.

“The role and statues of girls in our society is very important. I thank God for blessing me with such a wonderful, hardworking and faithful daughter.

“I am proud to be her mother.”

Proud father, Farook Begg said: “I always tell my children about our struggle so that they know and work hard to stand on their own two feet and do much greater things in life,” Mr Begg said.

“My advice to other parents is to talk to their children and encourage them to focus in their education because this modern technology life is very challenging.”

Faheemah also received awards in computer studies, special award in wizard, senior deputy Head girl award and best subject prizes in chemistry and economics.
