Fourteen-year-old Wesley Simms yesterday was caught speechless after taking out the Best All Rounder award at the Labasa Primary School prizegiving.

“I am very happy and proud to be named the outstanding student of the year,” Wesley said after struggling to find words when the Fiji Sun approached him.

“My dad has always been my inspiration. If there is one thing that I would advise students and that is to work hard. Do not let anyone change you, or stop you from achieving your goal.”

The Melbourne native moved with his family from Australia four years ago. He said he had learnt a lot during the past four years.

His proud mother Tess Simms said; “Just this morning he was telling me that he has adjusted well into the community here and Labasa Primary School has played an important role in that.

“He is very hard working and it is important to do things moderately, to keep it at a balance.

“My advice to parents is to treasure your time now with your children. Because one day they will leave and for now, it is important that we support them in their dreams.”

Wesley, who is the head boy of the school, said he wished to be a banker in the future.

“I am looking forward to joining Year Nine next year and for tertiary later, I will decide but as long as it is a good university whether it be the University of the South Pacific or any other,” Wesley said.

He received the Lunch Prize for Year 8, a newly introduced programme where children’s lunches are checked for balanced and healthy diets, Health Inspection for Year 8, where checks are made on students for cleanliness and tidiness every morning and the Best All Rounder Award.
