A $36,000 new project, which included a bore-hole and fence for Vatukoula Arya Samaj Primary School, was opened yesterday by its donors, the New Zealand High Commission.

Second Secretary at the New Zealand High Commission, Sally Page commended the staff of Vatukoula Arya Samaj School for their resilience in enabling students to resume normal classes.

The aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Winston caused infrastructural damage and affected a number of people.

“New Zealand is proud to stand by Fiji in its time of need,” she said.

Before the project started the only source of water that the students had access to was from a bore-hole, which was contaminated with Planarian worms and had a high level of E-coli. This was sealed off immediately.

Ms Page said they were able to source clean water again for the students through the help of Habitat for Humanity Fiji (HFHF).

“Last year we were approached by your school to assist with the bore-hole project because the only source of water at the school was contaminated and students’ health was at risk,” she said.

“We are very pleased to contribute towards improving and providing access to education which will benefit the students.”

Meanwhile, the construction of the new school fence will now ensure the safety of the staff members and students.

Ms Page said the Commission was now working with Government to start working on long-term recovery activities.

Head teacher Sanju Ratnam acknowledged the High Commission for completing the project.
