Fiji White Edge Aussies In Final

The Qilu Elliot-captained Fiji White pulled off a major surprise defeating Australia 2-1 in the men’s Central Zonal Beach Volleyball Championship final at Smugglers Cove Resort in Nadi yesterday.

Versatile Elliot and Inia Korowale playing under the scorching western heat took out the opening set 21-14 but the Aussies bounced back to clinch the second set 21-14.

Experience saw the Fijians taking out the final set 15-8 to claim the title.

Coach Waisake Raratabu is confident all the players know what’s expected come the Oceania Championship today.

“The Fiji White pair stick to the good game plan and learnt a lot from their earlier loss to Australia,” he said.

“To all the four men and three women teams they have a through platform to gauge themselves and their opponents which should work in their favour in the coming three days.”

Raratabu applauded national team’s sponsors Unitex and Vee Tee Shack for their commitment.

In the semi-final Fiji White defeated favourites PNG 2-0 while Fiji Black laced with Malai Tuifagalele and Raymond Stoddart Jnr lost to Australia 2-1 in the other semi-final.

Vanuatu took out the Central Zonal Beach Volleyball Championship women’s title beating Australia 2-0 in the final.

The reigning Oceania beach volleyball queens won the opening set 21-15 before sealing the match with a 21-14 win in the second set.

Favourites New Zealand won the Eastern Zonal beating Cook Islands 2-1. The Kiwis won the opening set 23-21 before Cook Islands levelled the match with a 21-15 win in the second set. New Zealand won the final set 15-10.

In the third/fourth playoff Fiji White (Claire Delai/Iliseva Ratudina) beat Papua New Guinea 2-1.

Meanwhile, the Oceania Beach Volleyball Championship ends on Saturday.
