Fiji’s gold medal winning performance at the Rio Olympics this year continued to be a topic of discussion during President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote  recent visit to Europe and the Middle East.

Speaking to the Vodafone Fijian 7s and the Telecom Fijiana women teams during their iTatau (tradional farewell) at State House yesterday, the President relayed his encounter with Queen Elizabeth II in London.

The President said he refrained from bringing up Fiji’s win but was surprised and happy when the Queen herself brought it up.

“Over the last couple of weeks during my travels in Europe and the Middle East, almost everybody I spoke to reminded me of our win in Rio,” he said.

“I was in Dubai and I had a discussion with the Crown Prince and they are all looking forward to the tournament next month.

“Even the Queen commented on the sevens win.

“She spoke to the Great Britain 7s captain Tom Mitchell wanting to know what happened in the final.

“And Mitchell reply was; “Ma’am we were thrashed.”

The President wished the team well and congratulated those who have been selected to represent the country.

“I would like to congratulate all of you for once again being selected to embark on another mission,” he said.

“We have a history we can be proud of because of what we have achieved as a team and as a nation.

“I’ve been following your progress and the fact that you stamped your mark on the world stage as world champions.

“I would like to acknowledge the continued participation of the old players on both teams and at the same time congratulate the new players who have big shoes to fill. Our prayers and thoughts go with you.”
