All children, irrespective of where they live in Fiji, must have access to education.  In addition, the quality of education should not be differentiated, says Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

He told students at the Suva Sangam College prizegiving ceremony in Suva yesterday that this was a major challenge for the Government.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said certain parts of Fiji had no network coverage, which was a challenge for Government to ensure that children had greater access to education materials.

“So from Government perspective, what we intend to do is give access to education to everybody from early childhood, primary school, high school,” he said.

Mr Sayed–Khaiyum said some children might not be interested in joining university, but good with trade work. He said they could be catered for in vocational institutions set up by the Government.

“All vocational trainings are provided by Government, there are currently 13 vocational colleges so those of you are leaving school, if you want to become a good electrician, there’s always training available for you,” he said.

He also said parents should not force children into a career that they were not interested in adding that children must pursue a profession that they were passionate about.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum thanked the teachers for their hard work.

He also reminded the students at the prizegiving that the country had a shortage of marine scientists, land surveyors, nurses, doctors, and engineers to consider as career opportunities.
