Despite being visually impaired at the age of six, Kijione Matava Bulivonu refused to let his disability become a barrier in his life.

Yesterday, the 13-year-old was rewarded for his hard work and perseverance when he was named the Dux of the Year for Ratu Nemani Memorial School, Momi in Nadroga.

Kijione scooped awards for the highest mark in the Year Eight examination, cleanliness and getting first place in his class.

He actively participates in sports and represents the district in soccer, rugby and athletics.

He is the third eldest out of four and lives with his 71-year-old grandmother, Kalesi Nadreke.

“I was so emotional over his achievement, because I am so proud of Kijione. He is always hardworking.

“I live with all my other grandchildren including him, because the parents live far away in the Island.

“Though he is visual impaired, he never lets this hinder him from always striving to do his best,” Ms Nadreke said.

“I always encourage him to work hard and if God permits me to live longer, I would like to witness how far he is going to go in life.

“At the moment he dreams of becoming a doctor, as his interest is more into science,” she said.

Ms Nadreke said her grandson wants to start his secondary school at Lomawai Secondary School because it’s close to where they live.

Kijione was happy winning the dux award and looks forward to secondary school life.
