Rahul Kumar will never regret the decision he made to return to school and continue his education.

At 16, Rahul was forced to leave school and find work to help support himself and a sister after the parents separated.

He made the decision to return to school after his cousin, Ravin Kumar, who is now the principal of Maharishi Sanatan College, requested that he return to school.

On Wednesday, Rahul scooped the Dux award and won other awards in history, Hindi, Geography and Maths, Best Oratory during the prizegiving ceremony.

An emotional Kumar said: “I had faced many challenges and also financial crisis, but still I am here today with the support of my school principal.

“I passed year 12 and then to year 13 and now this, I am over the moon right now. I plan to join a tertiary institute next year and pursue my dream of becoming a lawyer.

“If you are determined to achieve something, work hard and pursue it because dreams do come true.”

His sister, Reshma Lata, said: “I feel so happy today and proud of him. After many challenges, sacrifice and hard work he managed to get this far.

“Some of the families thought he was weak, he won’t be able to get this far, and he has proved everyone wrong.

“I have always advised him to study hard and never lose hope because I will always be there just as he has for me.”

Kumar now lives in Votualevu with his paternal uncle, Rohit Kumar and Aneshni Kumar, who are both very supportive of him and his sister Reshma Lata who is now doing her first year  Education course at the Fiji National University Natabua in Lautoka.
