A father’s hope for his child to win an award became a total surprise when his son, Lagilava Martin Paulo, was named Dux on Wednesday.

The 13-year-old of Tuakoi, Rotuma, walked away with the Dux award during the Makoi Muslim Primary School prizegiving ceremony.

His father, Pio Paulo, 53, said it was a proud moment for him to see his son awarded as the Dux of the year.

“I somewhat expected that my son will win some awards but winning the dux award at this school was like a dream come true for me,” Mr Paulo said.

“I am sure this is just the beginning of his successful secondary school life and I am assured that he will prove to be the best in his high school as well.

“I am a proud father of my son and I was not surprised of his achievements because he has always been academically well recognised since Year One.”

Lagilava is the only child in the family.

The Year Eight student also won five recognition certificates and six trophies during the event in Nasinu.

Lagilava said: “It was my parents who had faith in me and knew that I will make it to the top.

“It is their blessing and support because of whom I am standing here with all my achievements.

“Being the only child was not an easy journey because my parents expected a lot from me, and knowing I am the only one, I have to fulfil their wishes and desires as well as mine,” Lagilava said.
