Sharifa Begum was the proudest grandmother on Wednesday when her grand-daughter, Shaheena Begum, was named Dux of Mulomulo Muslim Primary School.

But she said this was expected of Shaheena given her commitment to studies and obedience.

“I am happy for her achievements. But things just begin now,” Ms Begum said.

Shaheena, who scooped six other awards, said: “I worked hard and I was hoping to be the Dux.

“I would like to thank my class teacher, Afroz Ali, and my parents for supporting and encouraging me all throughout my primary school.”

She is looking to pursue a career in law and looking forward to attend Nadi Muslim College next year.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Trade, Industry and Tourism, Faiyaz Koya, told parents at the event to invest in their children’s education for their future.

“There is no loss, but rather only gain from such an investment,” he said.

He commended the school management for being able to offer education to at least 200 students from 100 families of two villages in the interiors of Nadi.
